In the late 1990s Disney was in trouble. After the successes of The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King, its movies began to decline. Films like Treasure Planet and Atlantis were box office flops.  People began to talk about Disney losing its soul.

Then Pixar animation joined the team and turned everything around with new standout films.

How did Pixar achieve this? A lot of reasons have been posited, but the one thing that underlies all of them is the fact that people who work for Pixar have fun. The grounds of the campus are beautifully groomed and house a swimming pool and volleyball courts. People ride scooters around the building. They even have a free cereal bar.

Now, your company isn’t Pixar, and you may not be able to put in a swimming pool…but it’s worth finding ways to create opportunities for fun and play in your workplace. Some of the benefits include:

  • Fewer employee sick days
  • Fewer employee absences overall
  • Greater energy levels
  • Cooperation is facilitated
  • Alleviate boredom and avoid burn-out

Even putting a basketball hoop in the car park lot or funny signs in the break room can be great ways to make your office more fun. What have you done to make your workplace more fun?
