We used a variety of pictures and images to consider:

How much fun can I plan to have?

Something yummy I can learn that will expand my mind - maybe a new skill?

I live in my physical body - what can I do to honour both my body and myself… Massage, holiday, new exercise, parachute jump…

What really helps to motivate me is a vision; something for my soul and self develoment… and mine is…

My desire is to create… in my life

The pictures were just perfect for each person and we are each going to hang them in our houses through the winter and notice as each one bear’s fruit.

Who had a special teacher when they were at school? Someone who opened up learning to be a fun and creative process? Most of us ‘teach’ others at some stage and find ways of doing it in a calm and easy way. Learning anything brings with it making mistakes. Lisa Sturge did a great job at the practise group last month and showed us Laughter Yoga exercises and there was one specific for making mistakes:

Take a deep breath in and quickly cover your mouth with both hands

fling your hands down and out wide whilst exploding into a huge laugh

Caution this exercise can create fun and good feelings in the body

Yet when it comes from learning from our own mistakes, we take ourselves very seriously and feel a wide range of emotions from irritation at ourselves to devastation that we have caused a problem for someone else.

At karate last week and one of the senior grades was helping a newbie, speaking very gently, praising every move that although was not anywhere near perfect, was better that they had done before. The student got better and better, it was beautiful to watch and I thought ‘how can I learn to speak that gently with myself, praising myself softly with encouraging eyes and a big smile?’

Love to hear your thoughts.

Dear Shapeshifters,

Next meeting 15th September 2009

I am reflecting on a busy summer filled with some balmy days and others with torrential rain, thinking about the onset of autumn and the time where we take stock and reconsider. Part of this process for me is to make the decision to start my Study Group Star Light Dreamers. This group will be different and I would like to use our next meeting on 15th September to introduce it. The focus will be on learning concepts of how to be a successful human, using a wide variety of ways including sharing, creativity and ceremony.

At the moment my plan is to have this group meet 6 times a year and so it could run alongside Shapeshifters.

Looking forward to seeing you all again on 15th September at 6:30pm in Oving.

Kindest regards
Emily

Its always a good place to start when those outside ourselves appear to be misbehaving or irritating us in some way. The Work allows us to find our part of it, taking the sting out of what is happening and can be used to completely heal and sort many a relationship issue.

It is my belief that our partners and others close to us simply reflect what is going on inside of ourselves. Whilst this on the face if it is a daunting fact, used with self care is a wonderful way of increasing our pleasure in relationship, both inside and outside of us. It helps us find the places where we beat up and make us feel small inside.

Physiology of Excellence

Our May practice group focused on creating smooth shifts from unresourceful states of being to excellent, powerful and motivated states. Using one of the early techniques from NL, the group was able to coach each other to connect a negative state to a positive state so that as soon as the negative state creeps up it automatically moves onto a state of excellence for that activity and context.
Because this is based around shifting physiologies it is suitable for all ages especially for children. So here it is for you to experiment with, before you do please brush up on your sensory acuity so that you can accurately calibrate each state and how it appears on the outside and what it feels like on the inside.

Step one:

Pick a recurring “stuck” state and re-enter it

See what you saw when you were last in the state, hear what you heard, see what you saw, feel what you felt and act and talk as you did, etc.

Most importantly, get your body into the position you were in when you were last in the state

When coaching note physiology in detail so you can recognise it again

Step two:

As soon as you can recognize the stuck state – go into a neutral state (Break state think of something completely different)

Step three:

Test that you can return to stuck state physiology at will. Break out of the stuck state to a neutral state. (More break states). Do this twice

Step four:

Choose a powerful resource state you would rather have in that situation and access it (for instance energy and optimism)

See what you would see when you are energetic, hear what you would hear when you are energetic, feel what you would feel when you are energetic, act and talk as you would when you are energetic, etc.

And most importantly, get into the position you would be in when you are energetic.

Step five:

Break the state again.

Step six:

Now cycle through in the following sequence:

Re-access the old stuck state by getting into unresourceful physiology, and as soon as you begin to feel the stuck feeling…

Immediately move into resourceful physiology and observe the physiological shifts and make sure they correspond to earlier observations.

Break state.

Run this cycle at least five times.

Negative State > Positive State> Neutral (Break) State

Practice several times daily for 2-3 days to make it automatic

This is a great way to create and automate new states that will make you resourceful in those places that you want to have that bit extra. This format is close to a swish pattern and for those who find swish visualisation challenging this is a great and powerful alternative.
Those that made it to the practice group went away with easy access to states of excellence for many circumstances and best of all big smiles as well. They also learnt how to stalk their positive states a great technique from John Grinder - no doubt we will cover that one again in the future so stay tuned.

Next time we will be setting ourselves up with Inner Mentors-how would it be to have the best advice and guidance on tap anytime anywhere? If you would like to know how, then let me show you.

Book now for the next Practice Group on 30 June

All the best

Richard Bandler recently made a rare visit to London, to give an evening talk on “How to Get the Life you Want”, and I was fortunate enough to get tickets!

NLP has helped me learn to much and really improve many aspects of myself, and many aspects of my life – so getting to hear Richard, the founder of NLP and well known raconteur was a great opportunity.

Any of you who have seen Richard talk, online or DVD will know that he is a great entertainer, as well a being very interesting and informative. He was great to listen to; talking about a range of experiences, how he got started with NLP, and some of his more extreme successes. Then he asked for volunteers. I am not sure that it would have been possible to put my hand up any quicker!

When has asked me to go up I was delighted, and not quite sure what to expect. He asked us to bring up an unpleasant memory that we have held onto for some time, and keep going back to, and used changing submodalities to reduce and remove their impact.

Then, in order to put something much more positive in its place, he hypnotised me. Having done my NLP Practitioner and Hypnosis Practitioner it was very interesting to have my conscious mind listening to and understanding what Richard was doing, and knowing that my unconscious mind was hearing what it needed to, and making the appropriate changes.

It was a wonderful and relaxing experience, and very interesting when I could follow what he was doing.

Has it helped?

Yes, it really has – and the most reassuring thing was that, with the training that I have done, I know that I can use those same tools to help other people as much as he helped me.

This week we explored compassion. Firstly we threw out the dictionary version which was pity for another and moved on to exploring ways we can Support, Listen and Challenge others to find their own solutions.

Secondly we found those people in our lives, both past and present where more compassion is needed. We discovered that with more compassion we became less at the effect of the other person and more resourceful in ourselves. Another beautiful evening where we each left feeling more at peace with ourselves and our lives.

Missed the evening?

Heres one of the exercises we did. This comes from Resurfacing by Harry Palmer.

Think about the person with whom you would like to feel more compassion e.g. irritaing person on the train, neighbour, family meber etc and repeat to yourself the following phrases one at a time.

Just like me, this person is seeking some happiness for his/her life

Just like me, this person is trying to avoid suffering in his/her life

Just like me, this person has known sadness, loneliness and despair

Just like me, this person is seeking to fulfill his/her needs

Just like me, this person is learning about life

I wish you much compassion for you and those in your world.

I wish you much optimistic hope and see you all again on 2 June.

Examining and experiencing three of the healing paradigms we have learned during our own journey of personal development and healing.

We began with NLP finding out the amazing things you can do to handle pain just by shifting the submodalities of your perceptions. For the uninitiated to NLP it seems unbelievable at first that a few simple mental shifts can remove a headache or ease joint pain and these are among just a few of the possible areas where this simple technique can be employed. When we experience pain, say a headache we just give a label to a set of sensations, with an NLP approach it is possible to be more specific about the qualities of the sensations. Once you have those then changing them for qualities that are malleable is easy and it is also something your brain does every second of the day. So next time you have a headache (not a hangover) follow this simple two stage procedure and notice what happens.

Stage 1

What is the exact location of the pain? (e.g. left side over eye)

What is the size and shape? (e.g.5cm and oblong)

What is the colour? (most often these are dark colours)

Is there a vibration or pulse?

Stage 2

Slow the vibration down until it stops or just dies away

Slowly change the colour through to white, grey or pale pastel

Change the shape by blurring the edges and thinking of it as a cloud or vapour

Take a breath and breath out the vapour, is it GONE NOW

If needed repeat until there is no pain left

One thing to remember is that pain is a signal so you need to pay attention to the signal especially when the same pain repeats and you don’t know why in which case then seek medical help.

Our second paradigm comes from Serge King a wonderful Hawaiian who taught us a technique called Dynamind. His idea is based on the fact that we are self healing creatures, we don’t have to tell our body how to heal a cut or broken bone it already knows. So what stops healing according to Serge King is the tension we hold in our body around the damaged place. Dynamind, which is a mixture of breathing, direct talking to the unconscious mind and tapping certain points onthe body is designed to release tension and so allow almost instant healing. Serge says that tension occurs in layers so Dynamind is a process which you repeat to delayer the pain and each time noticing any changes (perfect for NLPer with good sensory acuity) and then include them in the next cycle. One of the group on the night bravely came forward with an ankle injury that had been healing for a while and was still giving him pain that night. Three cycles of Dynamind and the pain he had experienced went completely much to his surprise.

Go to Dynamind for more details.

Our last paradigm Tapping was one Emily has used for over 6 years in various combinations through La Rue Epplers Soultalk process and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). Emily guided the group through the points and processes that she found effective over the years working one to one with her clients. There is plenty of information out there on the internet about tapping and if you want to know more and experience Emily’s amazing synthesis of healing techniques for yourself then do contact her.

In the meantime book up for next month and The Physiology of Excellence technique with me.
