What is NLP?

Despite it’s rather off-putting and jargon like name Neuro Linguistic Programming, NLP is simply one of the finest tools for developing yourself. NLP helps us find out how we communicate with others and ourselves and how to change the things we don’t like. Whether you want to excel at work, develop your sporting capabilities or find out what makes people tick to improve your relationships, NLP provides the tools.

The fundamental building blocks that the models of NLP provide, allow you to rediscover and update the natural communication skills all humans are born with. We start by learning how to gain and enhance rapport with anyone we meet, how to read the signs which humans give out through their facial expressions and body language, and to hear the hidden language behind what we say.

As you progress in your understanding of NLP you will learn how to develop powerful outcomes. By utilising your natural stimulus response mechanism you can be the way you choose in any situation. Discovering the way we hold and process our perceptions can become a pathway to excellence.

There is now almost 30 years of experience and discoveries that make NLP one of the most comprehensive development tools available. Indeed once you know some NLP you will start to recognise its imprint on the majority of high profile self-development Gurus.

The tools of NLP can be applied to almost every field where communication and interaction with people is essential to success, if you have a speciality then the application of some of the NLP models may lead you to excel in ways that were beyond your dreams.

NLP History

NLP was born in the seventies in California when a linguist, John Grinder and a mathematician, Richard Bandler, set out to identify the difference between the behaviour of people who are competent at a particular skill and those who excel. By careful and detailed observation, they modelled the behaviour of top psychotherapists, Virginia Satir and Fritz Perls, together with Milton Erickson, the world famous hypnotherapist. Although these individuals had very different styles, they used surprisingly similar underlying patterns.

From this original exercise and studying other excellent performers, Grinder and Bandler designed an elegant model for others to use to improve their own performance, become excellent communicators, and learn how to access and change their own patterns leading to personal evolution and growth.

This class of activity, called modelling in NLP, has remained central to developments in the field of NLP, in business, teaching, personal development and therapy contexts. Top teachers, salesmen, financial dealers, motivational speakers and therapists have been modelled so that their skills can be passed on to others.

Many other individuals have contributed to the development of NLP. Whilst much of the original work could be described as having a 'behaviourist' approach, more recently importance has been placed on the person's identity, beliefs and values that underpin his or her behaviour. The understanding of the relationship and balance of the conscious and unconscious minds is central to most current NLP training.
